Frond Stem

pausing to rest on the virescent fern lined trail
a smallish larva or other insect caught my attention
then completely and unapologetic, mesmerized me
spinning and swaying slowly from a strand of a spider's weave
turning and somersaulting in the gentle forested breeze
I swear I could see an artist on a circus trapeze
head over heels over again and again with such ease
in this mountainous ravine of redwood and oak
birds calling and warning to all in need of such affection
the puny worm dances and turns on a thin silken thread
its tiny body continuing to amuse in time suspend
then my senses lapse and the path begins to near its end
one final closer view was framed of my acrobatic friend
witnessing a wondrous moment to transcend
yet where my attention had been so much in rapt
was but a stripped-down naked frond stem
detached from any life it once may have had
leafy branches and filtered sun, segments the shape into naught
yet it reappears in whole with more light and draws a lasting
thought
realities that may not be have much to be brought
the animations of a frond stem is but a living upshot
